Dronfield Brass Band

In 1970, the deputy headmaster of Henry Fanshawe School, Ian Cottier, placed an article in the parish magazine about “brass banding” and subsequently the Dronfield Band was formed. The band actively contested and by the mid-1990s attained a 2nd Section grading. At the same time the band moved to the renovated Coal Aston Village Hall.

Due to limited rehearsal space at Coal Aston, in 2011, the band moved to the Michael Church in Lowedges, Sheffield, where we now rehearse twice a week; we also have a thriving community band of young and not so young learners. Many of the players eventually move on to perform with the main band.

Over recent years the band has toured extensively throughout Europe, to Sindelfingen, Germany, the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland twice and in 2011 we went to Belgium for a week. In the same year we also received sponsorship from Genquip, a supplier of mobile site units for construction companies. 2011 concluded with our attendance at the Fourth Section National Finals and we have been to a further three since then.

Because of our placing at the recent Yorkshire Brass Band Championship we are once again promoted to the 2nd Section Grading from 2019 and we will be representing Yorkshire at the National Finals in September at Cheltenham.

To coincide with the 1918-2018 World War 1 commemoration, we are touring Belgium in August where we will play in Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp, Leuven, Ghent and the highlight will be taking part in The Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate in Ypres. Every night at dusk the road under the memorial is closed and the Last Post is sounded, this is dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown.

Dronfield Genquip Band are very proud of our roots in Dronfield and consider it a privilege to represent the town at the National Finals and further afield.
